With its dual bearing center support and integrated midplate, the GF4A is a very compact and versatile transmission. The center support plate not only holds the main shaft in place during excessive abuse, but holds the counter shaft in position as well.

This design virtually eliminates shaft separation even under the most severe circumstances. The integrated midplate design offers superior rear bearing support and further eliminates the possibility of costly leaks.

The GF4A uses a standard-of-the-industry 32 spline output shaft and can be had with nearly any input shaft desired. The transmission can be built with virtually any ratio combination required and because all gears are directly interchangeable, ratio changes are seemingly effortless. Both the main case and tailhousing are cast of high-quality magnesium and are strategically reinforced for added strength. All cases and tailhousings are coated for surface protection and ease of cleaning.

Any standard H-Pattern shifter can be used with the GF4A, but Long Shifters are highly recommended to extract the maximum performance from these transmissions. To add to the versatility of the GF4A, an internal oil pump can be fitted directly to the transmission case which eliminates the need to have a stand-alone oil pump to circulate oil through the transmission and cooler. This pump is gear driven via the counter shaft drive gear which improves efficiency and greatly reduces the likelihood of pump failure due to broken drive belts.Ask anyone who's owned a manual-transmission-equipped Fox-body and there's a good chance they have a story about grenading the stock T5 transmission.

Some snap at the hit, others break on a good powershift, but most often they let go in the middle of a long Third-gear pull. Whether you've blown one or not, you fall into two categories: the ones who have blown a stock T5 and the ones who will blow a stock T5. That's not to say the World Class T5 is a horrible transmission.

Quite the contrary, as it's a lightweight, slick-shifting, synchronized five-speed box that can hold considerable power for its size. At stock ish power levels, the T5 is a great transmission, but bring the torque output above lb-ft with sticky tires, and its days are numbered.

Even the strongest of stock T5 boxes, the '93 Cobra spec units, were only rated for lb-ft, so you can imagine our trepidation in feeding lb-ft of torque at the wheels that's roughly lb-ft at the crank through our stock T5. The first few track outings with the stock components were anything but frustrating since forward progression was hindered by the worn differential and old T5.

G-Forcing the issue

Any attempt at powershifting was met with protest, and forcing the issue would have ended in disaster. Instead, we launched soft and granny-shifted our way to some unimpressive e. Miraculously, the stock T5 survived without spilling its guts, but a closer examination of the input shaft after it was removed revealed tons of free play.

In other words, it was one good shift away from leaving the building. In search of an ever-elusive second smog-legal timeslip, we decided another stock T5 just wasn't going to do.

While thoughts of a six-speed box were tempting, we decided to save the additional plus pounds and stick with the tried and true G-Force Racing Transmissions Street T5. Needless to say, they're damn good. Over a decade ago, G-Force saw the need for a reliable T5 transmission when Mustang owners began pushing their cars beyond the capabilities of the stock boxes.

Not one to leave anything to chance, G-Force redesigned the internals, and in turn, produced a T5 unlike any before it. The high-nickel-content gears are softer than the stock gears, but actually much stronger.

The increased physical size of the gears gives them strength, while the softer material helps prevent failure from shearing compared to the stock units. Because of the material, G-Force recommends a special Syngear oil that protects the gears from undue damage. This special stuff can be purchased from Syngear directly or through G-Force. As for the rest of the internals, the mainshaft is also beefed up from the stock spline shaft to a hardy spline unit forged from alloy steel.

The burly unit helps resist deflection and adds more mating surfaces for the clutch disc. According to G-Force, gear spreading is a big problem with the stock transmissions.

When the gears are loaded, the meshing teeth attempt to push apart from each other—the greater the load, the more severe the problem. The stock mainshaft only exacerbates this problem as it deflects under load, leaving only the gear tips the thinnest area of the gear in contact, which ultimately leads to catastrophic failure.

As for why Third gear is the weak spot on stock units, G-Force explained that the third cog is not only the thinnest of gears, but it's also farthest from any bearing, which means this lack of support leads to extreme gear spreading.Display Options.

The biggest difference from the previous generation G TEX is that the new GA has a centre dual-bearing support plate that helps keeps the shafts from spreading under high loads. This greatly increases its horsepower capability and also prolongs the life of the dog-rings and faceplates.

The GA will take approximately HP depending on the torque and the vehicles intended purpose. The GA can be built with a wide range of input shafts and all gears are interchangeable from a wide range of gear-sets. It became the transmission of choice. These are cost-effective and built to a market requirement. The GA is a great alternative to a 5 speed when looking at cost savings in either a drag race transmission or road racing transmission.

The GA has also been proven to be very effective in Drift racing. Also this transmission has been approved for various spec-type classes worldwide. In addition, G-Force released a new ultra-tough case for the T Big, straight-cut gears ride on a beefy mainshaft.

Notice the bearing in the center of the mainshaft and the handcuff system that holds the mainshaft and the cluster shaft together. Many of the innovations for the T-5 and T56 come from this transmission. The mainshaft is one of the weak links in the T While it is fine for most applications, the high torque loads imposed by modified Cobra engines can snap it like a twig.

G-Force offers two replacements. The components in the T56 upgrade kit include new first, second, and third gears, a new cluster shaft, and a new input shaft mainshaft optional.

There are three gear spreads available see chart so you can pick the best ratio for your combination. The G-Force mainshaft top isn't much fatter than the stock shaft, but the material makes it tons stronger. A M Thru Hard Premium Alloy shaft is also offered for those needing the ultimate in reliability. You can see a big difference between the G-Force input bottom and the stock one. The G-Force shaft is thicker and the teeth on the gear are beefier, too. In addition, there is less helical angle to the gears, which keeps more of the teeth in contact and that spreads the load over more surface area providing more strength.

G-Force's cluster is a monster compared to the stock one. Notice the difference in width and pitch between the stock T56 cluster The T56 is not overly complicated, but it is cumbersome to work on because the assembled shafts must be slid into the case, and they must mesh together and be fitted into the bearings at the rear of the case.

A few extra hands help during assembly. Virtually all of the manufacturing is done in-house at G-Force. In order to increase strength, G-Force widened all the gears when space permitted. This shot of the speed gears also shows the taper, which is where the syncronizers fit on. Here, the input shaft is installed in a T G-Force will sell you the kit or rebuild your transmission for you.

A G-Force T-5 ready to rock. While G-Force doesn't recommend putting a T-5 behind a horse engine, word is that a dog-ring version of the G-Force T-5 has already been in the 9s in a plus-hp Mustang. In a former life, one that I remember quite well, your faithful scribe was known as the T-5 Bandit. I've bent, broken and, in some cases, demolished T-5 and T transmissions; some were mine, some were not.

In total, I've wiped out about 20 gearboxes, but who's counting? Besides, I'm not the only offender. I worked at a Ford dealership back in the late '80s, so I know many others have broken a T-5, T or I'm quite sure many of you are shaking your head in agreement.

With it comes the promise of long transmission life and much quicker shifting. In addition, G-Force's G four-speeds are used by a number drag racers and top circle track teams.

But where does that leave the typical Mustang owner? In good hands, that's where. G-Force recently released a complete line of upgrades for the popular Tremec T-5 and T56 trannys. Not only are the parts stronger, there is a variety of gear ratios to chose from and a new transmission case for the T Amazingly, G-Force's top of the line T-5 is rated up to hp, while the T56 is rated to withstand stomping ponies. G-Force actually offers three versions of the T-5 and there are three gear ratio sets.
